Aari Work Blouse: Designs, Fabrics and How to Choose

Aari Work Blouse: Designs, Fabrics and How to Choose

Aari work is a style of hand embroidery done with a hooked needle, called an aari, which lets the embroiderer work quickly with thread, beads, sequins and stones. It is the traditional choice for bridal blouses across Tamil Nadu, and it is one of the best ways to personalise a silk saree.

What makes Aari work special

Unlike machine embroidery, every motif is worked by hand, so no two blouses are exactly alike. The hooked needle makes a chain stitch that can be built up into flowers, peacocks, vines, mango motifs and temple borders. It can be fine and delicate or heavily textured, depending on the thread and stones used.

Popular Aari work designs

  • Floral and creeper patterns: light and elegant, good for daily and festive wear.
  • Peacock and mango motifs: a South Indian favourite for weddings.
  • Zardosi and stone work: rich and shimmering, for bridal and reception blouses.
  • Bead and kundan accents: adds depth at necklines and sleeve edges.

Choosing the right fabric

Aari work needs a fabric that can support the weight of the embroidery. Raw silk, pure silk, and fine cotton silk work well. Very light or slippery fabrics may pucker under heavy work, so a good lining and a firm backing are important. Your tailor should test the fabric before starting.

Colour and thread choices

Gold and antique gold threads suit almost every Kanjivaram. For a contemporary look, try copper, rose gold or a thread that picks up the colour of the saree border. Bring a piece of your saree so thread colours can be matched in daylight, not under shop lights.

How much work is enough?

Think about where the work will be seen. Embroidery on the sleeve borders and neckline frames the face and arms. Back designs are a good place to be bold. If your saree is already heavily woven, keep the blouse work balanced so the two do not compete.

Time and care

Detailed Aari work takes time, sometimes weeks. Order early. Once your blouse is ready, store it in a soft cotton cloth, away from damp and perfume, and avoid washing embroidered blouses at home. Dry clean only.

Can Aari work be added to a ready-made blouse?

In many cases yes, if the fabric and lining can support it. Bring the blouse and we will tell you what is possible.

How do I care for an embroidered blouse?

Keep it dry and clean it only by dry cleaning. Store it folded in a soft cloth.
